How to measure for topsoil
- Measure the length and width of your area in feet.
- Multiply them for square feet (or just enter length and width above).
- Choose a depth — we default to 4 inches for topsoil.
- Read your total in cubic yards, or the number of bags.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between fill dirt and topsoil?
Fill dirt is subsoil used for structure and grade — cheaper, with little organic matter. Top it with quality topsoil if you'll plant or seed.
How much fill dirt do I need?
Multiply the area by the depth you're raising. Enter both above for cubic yards; for big jobs, suppliers sell fill by the truckload.
