Much of the Lincoln area maps to the Alamo series and similar claypan soils: a clay layer at moderate depth resting on a dense hardpan. Water moves through the surface a little, then hits that clay-over-hardpan barrier and stops, perching in the root zone instead of soaking away. In summer the clay shrinks and cracks into "adobe" brick; from the first November storms through March it swells into a sponge that sheds water across the surface, so runoff collects in the lowest spot and pushes against the slab.
