How many rolls of turf do I need?

Divide your lawn area (in square feet) by the coverage of one roll, then round up and add ~10% for cuts and gaps. A 2 ft × 5 ft roll covers 10 sq ft, so a 500 sq ft lawn needs about 55 rolls with waste. The calculator does this for whatever roll size your supplier uses.

What size are turf/sod rolls?

It varies by farm. Residential sod often comes as 16" × 24" slabs (~2.7 sq ft) or small hand rolls around 2 ft × 5 ft (10 sq ft). Commercial 'big rolls' are machine-laid and run 2–4 ft wide by 50+ ft long. Always confirm the exact size before ordering — use the Custom option to match it.

Rolls, slabs, or pallets — what's the difference?

They're just different units for the same grass. Slabs/pieces are small hand-laid rectangles; rolls are longer strips; a pallet bundles roughly 450–500 sq ft of either. The calculator shows the roll count plus the pallet and slab equivalents so you can order whichever your supplier sells.

How much extra sod should I order?

About 5–10% over your measured area covers trimming around curves, beds, and edges. Order it all at once so it's cut from the same harvest and matches. The calculator's 10% allowance is on by default.

How many rolls of artificial turf do I need?

Artificial turf comes on fixed-width rolls (commonly 15 ft, sometimes 12 or 6 ft) cut to length, so you order linear feet, not pieces. You lay parallel strips across the area and seam them: the strip count is your area's width divided by the roll width (rounded up), and the linear feet is the strips times their run length. Switch to Artificial turf mode above and it works out the strips, seams, linear feet, and waste for you.

Why is there so much waste with artificial turf?

Two reasons: the roll width rarely divides evenly into your area, so the last strip is partly trimmed off; and every strip must run the same direction (the pile leans one way), so you can't rotate pieces to fit. Areas sized near a multiple of the roll width waste the least — the calculator picks the lower-waste of the two strip orientations.
